The understanding and practicing of professional ethics is critical in the future careers of Child and Family Studies graduates. Ethics are defined as a set of moral principles. During the completion of the required internships for CFS students, the students are offered endless opportunities to practice professional ethics. To be an ethical person is the core of a human services worker. The importance of living and acting the way human service workers promote their clients to live has been reiterated to students multiple times throughout the curriculum. This is truly the core of being a successful helper to others. This directly ties to practicing professional ethics in and out of the work place. Students are taught ethical dilemmas are often not really dilemmas, but just that the right choice is challenging. To fully understand and practice professional ethics, students must know who they are, for what they stand, and for what they will not stand.
CFS graduates discussed the need to practice professional ethics at all times with clients. Students learned if they practice ethics professionally, then they will be able to predict how their clients will respond. It is critical for graduates to remember that when serving future populations, they must have a sense of ethical practice and an awareness of the population’s cultural and ethnic background. Practicing professional ethics is particularly important when graduates conduct interviews or research. To provide the participants with informed consents and ensure confidentiality is being ethical in the work place. It is also important to understand all helping professions have a code of ethics. In the course Social Work 3003, the code of ethics of social workers was discussed. Social workers practice the following ethical principles: service, social justice, dignity and worth of people, importance of human relationships, integrity, and competence. Generally, the code of ethics includes protecting the client, not harming the client, and having the client’s best interest in mind.

I displayed professional ethical standards by collecting data and evaluations of character education curriculum programs. Also as an intern at Manners of the Heart, I helped the instructors facilitate and teach the weekly character education lessons. I am currently still employed at Manners of the Heart almost two years later and am one of the Program Assistants. This past summer, I served as the YMCA Coordinator for six YMCA locations in the Baton Rouge area. I worked as the key point person of communication between the YMCA administration and the Manners of the Heart administration.
