The understanding of the decisions made by individuals and families about resources, such as, time, money, material assets, energy, friends, neighbors, and space is a concept highlighted in multiple courses in the Child and Family Studies curriculum. CFS students learned how mate selection relates to resource management. The acronym FEMPS was taught as a means of remembering the various relations of mate selection and resource management. The F in FEMPS represents the desire to choose someone with similar financial habits. The E in FEMPS represents the desire to choose someone on the same emotional level. The M in FEMPS represents the desire to choose someone who is mentally stable and can take care of his or her self. The P in FEMPS represents the desire to choose someone who is physically healthy and takes care of his or her self. The S in FEMPS represents the desire to choose someone who shares similar spiritual beliefs. The concept of watching television was also related to family resource management. Viewing television ruins family communication connections, allows for mercenary parenting, and eliminates transition time. However, when families deliberately view television, bonding can occur between the family members when watching movies. Another key concept discussed pertaining to family resource management was the idea of bulbs and blooms of flowers and people. The concept includes trimming back the blooms to allow the bulbs to grow stronger. The bulbs represent a person’s values, morals, and integrity. The blooms represent a person’s material items. It is critical to develop the bulbs of children and not the blooms. It is important to take the opportunity to know someone’s morals and values and not the material assets they possess. An advantage of the CFS curriculum is that students are taught more than just how to manage financial resources. There are various other resources CFS students are taught how to manage and develop, such as, energy, time, and relationships, that may be even more critical than money.
