The understanding of human sexuality provides Child and Family Studies students with knowledge of the physiological, psychological, and social aspects of sexual development. The course Kinesiology 2600 offers a vast amount of information on human sexuality. The purposes of sex are initially discussed in the course. For procreational or traditional purposes, relational purposes, and recreational purposes, are all reasons as to why people engage in sexual activity. In addition, the female anatomy, including the vulva, vagina, hymen, uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovary, and the male anatomy, including the seminal vesicle, prostrate gland, and Cowper’s gland, are all thoroughly explained with graphic images. The professor also discusses the two arousal systems required for sexual arousal in both males and females. The central arousal system, involving the brain and internal motivations, such as, one’s thoughts and fantasies, and the peripheral arousal system, including the spinal reflexes and external motivations, such as, sensations from the genitals, both interact to sexually arouse men and women. Masters and Johnson’s 4 Phase Model for sexual arousal was also elaborated on in the discussion of sexual arousal in Kinesiology 2600. The four phases, excitement, plateau, orgasm, and resolution, all explain the process of sexual arousal in the different sexes. Finally, the course also elaborated on the effects of aging on one’s sexual response. Students learned that the aging population continues to have satisfying sexual relationships until death. Several factors play into this theory including their previous experiences of sexual activity and their availability and accessibility to partners. The gained knowledge of human sexuality is important for CFS graduates to grasp because of their future roles in serving various populations of people from children to the aging.
